Summer School 2011 was a huge success with Shingitai members from all over the country descending on Burry Port for the annual week long training. This year we were very fortunate and honoured to have with us Dr Hiroaki Izumi Sensei. Shihan Gwynne Jones was also surprised on the Friday by a gift from the students to celebrate 50 years of Aikido. (If anyone has any photos of this or indeed any of the Summer School they will be much apreciated so please get in touch with the Editor through the 'contact us' section of this website [see top menu above])
Izumi Shihan was accompanied by Kyoshi Roger Payne Shihan, UK Dai Nippon Butoku Kai Official Representative, who kindly did the liaison to secure Izumi Shihan visit to Wales. Kyoshi Payne will also be instructing on the Sunday. Izumi Sensei is Shihan of West Indies Aikido Federation, which includes Barbados, Jamaica, St. Lucia and the other Islands that make up that whole area. Dr Hiroaki Izumi, B.Sc. Adv., M.B.A., Ph.D. is also Managing Director of MNX International Consulting Services Ltd., and also Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Business Administration at Gulf University for Science & Technology in Kuwait. Prior to his present positon with the West Indies Aikido Federation Sensei was Shidoin for Kawahara Yukio Shihan of the Canadian Aikido Federation since 1995 and also Fuku Shidoin for Cottier Shihan of the Hong Kong Aikido Federation (1990 - 1995) & Fuku Shidoin for Tohei Akira Shihan of the Midwest Aikido Federation (1987 - 1990). Many thanks to both Izumi Shihan and Kyoshi Roger Payne Shihan who gave instruction on the Sunday. Izumi Shihan has in the past been Defensive Tactics Instructor for Royal St. Lucia Police, Saskatchewan Highway Traffic Enforcement, Canadian Department of National Defence 15 Wing, Royal Hong Kong Police & Texas Corrections and Law Enforcement Officers School and holds SanDan Kendo within the Canadian Kendo Federation so his instruction was well received. As is the Shin Gi Tai custom of openess and collaboration with all styles of Aikido, the society members were happy to embrace and try out new principles and applications demonstrated by both Izumi Shihan and Roger Payne Shihan. The AGM is now held during the Summer School week and was well attended. Training by various Shin Gi Tai instructors continued all week with a good contingent of 1st kyus attending for their Dan grading.
